The United States will impose sanctions on the head of Sudan’s sovereignty council, army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Thursday, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
Two of the sources with direct knowledge of the matter said the sanctions, which come after similar measures were imposed on Burhan’s rival earlier this month, are intended to show that the U.S. is targeting both sides of the conflict with reciprocity and pushing them toward a return to a civilian-led governance path.
One of the sources, a diplomat, said the move was prompted by the SAF’s targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, blocking aid and refusing to participate in peace talks last year.
